Use
Gimp to Clear Up Your Digital Images
Red
Eye Removal
(Part of a Digital Images Training Class)
Red
eyes in pictures is a common and troublesome problem. Red eye
is caused by the flash reflecting from the eye back into the
lens. One way to prevent red eye is to have the
subject look at the photographer's shoulder while the picture
is being taken.
Open a picture
with the red eye problem. To do this go to File-Open.

Then
navigate to find the source of the picture. In this case the
picture is on the hard drive, located on the hard-drive.

The
picture will then load.

This
is the Gimp Toolbar, from here a user can select which tools
are needed for each individual task. In this task we are going
to use the Dodge/Burn Tool.
The
Brush Tool
Select
the right size for your job, choose the 7 X 7 size brush with
the fuzzy outside circle. This allows the brush to create soft
edges, you won't have to be as exact with your corrections.
C
hange
both of these options to the bulleted selections.
Zoom
in, notice the red pupils. Take the brush tool click on the
red pupil. With each click the color should change slowly, in
this example I clicked around 50 to 60 times before I was finished.
The color should slowly begin to change and blend in. The color
will not be a perfect match, but you can manage how dark the
color of the eye is by how many time you click.

After
playing with it for several minutes, I came up with a finished
result. After the photograph is backed out all the way the red
eye appears to be gone.
