Linux in The Virtual Classroom

by mike on 09/03/2009

We have  found that many organizations moving to Linux for the first time are  including the GUI on the servers because of the challenges to learning for the Windows admins.  This may not be the most secure practice nor the best use of system resources but for organizations that have run the GUI for the history of the company, this is the way it must be in the short term.    The advantage of the Virtual Classroom is that the flexibility of the presentation can easily provide these options.

Often times we train administrators to use their skills from the command line but provide a GUI example of tools as an alternative, as you see system monitoring in the example.

Access to the Virtual Classroom
Recently, I had a class with students from 5 countries in the Virtual Classroom at the same time.  In today’s shrinking global classroom,  access for all students is a major issue.  Many organizations have offices world wide with the requirements to train those individuals.  The Virtual Classroom allows them to place students in a Virtual Classroom regardless of location.  It provides a company a way to train their employees in the same classroom as well.  Sure, there are time differences but the advantages of a company being able to train students at one time in the same environment with interaction between them is worth dealing with the time issues.  Access is provided by a multitude of applications you can use to share a screen and communicate.  VOIP allows students to speak in the classroom and not worry about cost or quality of voice as it is excellent.  Students view the work of the instructor as they can talk and watch command line demonstrations or examples of the the graphical tools that are available.
