On-site Linux Training

Disadvantages of OnSite Training
Just like everything, you have to weigh both sides before you can make a choice.  There are some serious issues that you must address if you are considering OnSite Training for Linux.

1. Students are Close to Work
The students because they are close to work are also likely to get pulled from class to do their regular job, disrupting their thought and focus.  If organizations want to train their people properly they need to keep them isolate from all work responsibilities so they can learn.  They cannot do two things at once.

2. You Must Have A Group
In order to be cost effective and bring  a trainer  OnSite you need to have a large enough group of people to justify the cost of the trainer.  Usually a group of 6 or more will allow a company to justify the cost of a trainer.  Typically when I have traveled to do training I am looking at a class size of 25.  This is really where both trainer and company can benefit.  Their are advantages of 25 people who interact in a class rather than the smaller 6-10.  However,  I have been in small classes with highly motivated individuals which is very beneficial.  So some of the advantages of size depends on the individuals in the class.

3. Physical Resources
The biggest mistake a company can make is to have a trainer come to teach Linux and either the students do not have servers to work on or the machines they are on are undependable and constantly need management during the class.  I have been in situations where the company has rented servers for the class which are completely used up and all the time was spent replacing hard drives that broke down during class.  You cannot train effectively on old slow junk!  If you want your employees to learn give them quality machines to work on so that is not what restricts the learning process.
