One of the features of Linux Training that is in the process of disappearing is On-site Training for Linux. I think that if it was a perfect world On-site Training would be the goal. However, as we continually see a world wide acceptance of Linux and companies moving to Linux for their servers, the need is often to have people from a number of locations be trained at the same time. Unless an organization can train a group of individuals with the same needs, On-site Training may not be the best option. When a company has the group, the resources and a training focus, then the On-site Training option may be an excellent choice. Here are some thought both ways on what works and what will not.
Advantages of On-site Training
On-site Training is when an organization hires a trainer to come to the organization to train employees.

1 .Students Not Exhausted From Travel
One of the things you will note quickly as a trainer is that when people travel to a training option they usually show up exhausted. Let’s face it travel is not fun nor is it restful to get crammed into a small space for hours with a crying baby behind you and a coughing sick person next to you…air travel is rough. To add to this, students typically have worked overtime to get “must do” projects done before they leave. So, students arrive exhausted and begin to struggle with their attention span in the first afternoon. OnSite Training helps eliminate all of those issues. The trainer arrives and students are ready to learn.
2. Save on Cost
If you have a group of people you want to train it is certainly cheaper to train them locally than to send them all across the country and pay air fare, lodging and training costs. This can actually mount up to a lot of money but more importantly it will also mount up to a lot of lost time for students as travel usually takes a day on each end and they arrive at training tired and back at the job tired.
3. Face to Face
It is amazing how much is gained in communication when people are face to face. Body language and facial expressions are important indicators as to the how students are processing the information they are receiving. Anytime people are close enough to exchange this information, communication will be enhanced.
4. Back Room Training
I am always interested to see the special training and opinions that are shared outside of class. This is one of the great values of bringing a trainer into your organization is that the trainer will often provide information outside of class to students and administrators that is extremely valuable.
